Adobe Acrobat’s Split tool divides a PDF by a number of pages, by file size, or at top-level bookmarks, which works well when every document has the same length or the PDF is already bookmarked. A scanned batch of invoices, letters and forms is different: documents vary in length and the scan has no bookmarks, so the split has to happen where each document starts. ScanRoute Local splits at barcode separator sheets or blank pages, names each file from a zone on the page, and shows every name before anything is written. For fixed-length forms, Acrobat’s page-count split is fine and you may not need anything else.
Split mixed-length scanned batches where each document starts, and name every file from the page.

What does Acrobat’s Split tool do?
Adobe’s help article Split PDFs describes it: open the PDF, choose All tools, then Organize pages, then Split, and pick how to split:
| Acrobat Split by | What it does |
|---|---|
| Number of pages | Divides the PDF into documents with a set number of pages each |
| File Size | Creates PDFs of a specified size |
| Top level bookmarks | Splits at each top-level bookmark |
You can also split multiple files at once, and Output options set the destination folder and a naming convention for the new PDFs. Facts from Adobe’s help article, checked on 17 October 2026.
For a stack of two-page forms, Number of pages set to 2 does the job in seconds. For a PDF exported with bookmarks per chapter, Top level bookmarks is perfect.
Why do scanned batches need a different split?
A copier batch is rarely uniform. One invoice is one page, the next is three, a letter is two, a contract is eleven. A fixed page count splits them in the wrong places, and a scan has no bookmarks to split at. Someone ends up paging through the PDF, noting where each document starts, and splitting by hand.
Then each file needs a real name, not the scanner’s timestamp, and a folder. That is usually the slowest part.
How do the two tools compare for scanned batches?
| Need | Acrobat Pro Split | ScanRoute Local |
|---|---|---|
| Split every N pages | Yes | Yes |
| Split at bookmarks | Yes, top-level | No |
| Split by file size | Yes | No |
| Split at barcode separator sheets | Not described in the article | Yes, Code 128 or QR with a prefix |
| Split at blank pages | Not described in the article | Yes |
| Name each file from text on the page | Naming convention in Output options | One OCR zone, a pattern for fields, and a template for name and folder |
| File into client folders | Destination folder | Template builds a folder per document, such as client |
| Review before writing | Not described | Preview of every name and folder, exception inbox for unsure reads |
| Record of what was written | Not described | CSV manifest with SHA-256 for every file |
| Watch a scan folder | Not described | Yes |
| Other PDF work | Full PDF editor: edit, sign, OCR, organize | Splitting and naming only |
| Price model | Part of Acrobat Pro | One-time purchase in the Microsoft Store |
“Not described” means Adobe’s split article does not mention it, not that no Acrobat feature can help. Acrobat facts checked on 17 October 2026.
How does ScanRoute Local split and name a batch?
ScanRoute Local turns one combined scan into separate, named PDFs on your PC.
- Separate the documents. Put a barcode separator sheet or a blank page on top of each document before scanning. Free printable sheets are available in Letter and A4.
- Scan once. The copier saves one PDF.
- Open or watch. Drop the PDF on ScanRoute, open several, or watch the scan folder.
- Draw one zone over the line that identifies each document, such as the invoice number and date.
- Set a pattern and template. The pattern pulls fields such as date, client, type and number and checks each one. A template such as
{Client}\{Date}_{Type}_{Id}.pdfbuilds the file name and folder. - Review. Preview shows every proposed name and folder. Documents that need a decision wait in the inbox with the zone crop beside them.
- Commit. Nothing is written until you commit. Originals are never changed, moved or deleted, no file is overwritten, and a CSV manifest records the SHA-256 of every file written.
With a Windows OCR language installed, upright scanned pages without text also get an invisible text layer, so the filed PDFs are searchable.

When is Acrobat the better pick?
- Fixed-length documents. If every form is the same page count, Split by Number of pages is quick and you already have it.
- Bookmarked PDFs. Splitting a report or a book at chapters is exactly what Top level bookmarks does.
- You need more than splitting. Acrobat edits, signs, redacts and organizes PDFs. ScanRoute only splits, names and adds a text layer.
- Mac users. ScanRoute is a Windows app.
When is ScanRoute the better pick?
- Mixed stacks. Invoices, receipts, letters and forms of different lengths in one scan.
- Names from the page. File names built from the invoice number, date and client, not typed by hand.
- Client or matter folders. Each document placed in its folder by the template.
- A check before filing. Preview and the inbox catch misreads before anything is written.
- Copier scan to folder. Watch the folder on this PC that the copier scans into and process each scan as it arrives. See copier scan to folder, split into named PDFs.
What are ScanRoute’s limits?
ScanRoute reads one zone per document. Sources, the watched folder and the destination must be folders on this PC; shared drives are not supported in this version. It runs on x64 Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OCR and barcodes can misread, which is why every name shows in Preview. The text layer covers upright scanned pages; rotated and some other pages are skipped and noted in the manifest.
Frequently asked questions
Can Acrobat split a scan at blank pages?

No. It works on its own and writes standard PDFs any reader opens.
Can ScanRoute split every N pages like Acrobat?
Yes. Every N pages is one of its split modes, alongside separator sheets and blank pages.
Does ScanRoute change my original scan?
No. Originals are only read, never changed, moved or deleted.
Does it upload anything?
No. Everything happens on your PC.
