How to Export an iPhone Group Chat to PDF on Windows: iMessage, MMS and SMS Groups Explained

Published October 20, 2026 Updated October 20, 2026 8 min read

To export an iPhone group chat on a Windows PC, back up the iPhone to the PC with Apple Devices or iTunes, then open that backup with a tool that reads the Messages database and save the group conversation as a PDF or CSV. BackupPaper, a Windows app from Automata Labs, lists every conversation in the backup, including group conversations, and writes the one you pick as a PDF with a header naming the participants, service and date range, or as a CSV with one row per message and reaction. How complete the export is depends on what kind of group it was, because Apple sends group iMessage, group MMS and group SMS in different ways.

This guide explains the three kinds of group, what each one leaves in your backup, and the steps to save the thread.

Open the iPhone backup on your PC, pick the group conversation, and save it as a PDF or CSV.

What kind of group chat is it?

Apple’s support article on group text messages says the Messages app picks the type automatically, based on settings, network connection and carrier plan:

TypeWhen it is usedBubblesWhat everyone can do
Group iMessageAll recipients use Apple devices with iMessage onBlueSee all responses; photos, video, audio; effects; name the group; add or remove people
Group MMSSomeone is not on iMessage and MMS Messaging is on and supported by the carrierGreenSee all responses; photos and videos; mute
Group SMSSomeone is not on iMessage and the group is sent as SMS rather than MMSGreenText only; responses arrive as individual texts
Group RCS (iOS 18 and later)Carrier support and RCS turned onGreenTexts, high resolution photos and videos, links, read receipts

Two details from Apple matter for an export:

  • In a group SMS, “all responses in a group SMS are sent as individual text messages and the recipients can’t see the other responses from the group.” So a reply you received may sit in a one-to-one conversation with that person rather than in a shared group thread.
  • Only group iMessages can be named. Apple’s article on naming a group text says you cannot name SMS/MMS group messages. An unnamed group shows up as a list of participants.

What does the backup on your PC contain?

A computer backup includes almost all of the iPhone’s data, but Apple’s backup methods article lists exceptions. One of them matters most here: data already synced and stored in iCloud, including iMessages and SMS and MMS messages, is not included. If Messages in iCloud is on, the computer backup may hold few or no conversations.

That leads to a quick checklist before you rely on a backup:

QuestionWhy it matters
Is Messages in iCloud on?If yes, the computer backup may not contain the thread
Is the backup encrypted? You need the password you set; it cannot be bypassed
When was the backup made?Messages after that date are not in it
Is it the right device?Backups are per device, in a folder under MobileSync\Backup

Our guides to the iPhone backup location on Windows and whether an iPhone backup includes text messages cover these in more detail.

How do you export the group chat with BackupPaper?

  1. Choose the backup folder. Apple Devices and iTunes keep each backup in a folder under MobileSync\Backup in your user profile. BackupPaper opens it read-only and never changes it. The iPhone does not need to be connected.
  2. Enter the password if the backup is encrypted. It is used on the PC only and is not saved. If you do not have it, BackupPaper cannot recover or bypass it; our guide to opening an encrypted iPhone backup explains your options.
  3. Pick the group conversation. BackupPaper lists iMessage and SMS conversations, including group conversations. Contact names appear when the backup includes the address book. Read the thread: time, sender, text, reactions, replies and attachment names.
  4. Export a PDF or CSV. The PDF uses US Letter pages, with a header naming the device, participants, service and date range, and page numbers. The CSV is UTF-8 with one row for each message and each reaction, with UTC and local times.
  5. Record the hash. BackupPaper shows a SHA-256 for the exported file. Compare it with the result of the Windows certutil command now or later; our guide to verifying a SHA-256 hash with certutil shows how.

Save a group thread with sender names, reactions and replies, and a hash you can check later.

What if the group was an SMS group?

Because each reply in a group SMS arrives as an individual text, the replies may be spread across one-to-one conversations with each participant. To reconstruct the exchange:

  1. Export the group conversation as it appears in the backup.
  2. Export the one-to-one conversation with each participant for the same date range. BackupPaper exports one conversation per file.
  3. Use the CSV exports to merge the messages by time in a spreadsheet, since each row carries UTC and local times.

Keep the original exports and their hashes alongside the merged sheet, so anyone can see what the merge was built from. Our page on exporting iPhone text messages to Excel covers working with the CSV.

What does a group chat export not include?

Be clear with whoever receives the file about what it shows:

  • Attachments are listed by name. Photos and videos are not placed in the PDF.
  • Deleted messages are not recovered. BackupPaper shows the messages the backup holds.
  • Only the Messages app. iMessage and SMS, not WhatsApp or other chat apps.
  • RCS is not listed. BackupPaper’s listing describes iMessage and SMS conversations. If the group used RCS, open the backup in the free trial and check that the thread is there before you rely on it.
  • Some scripts in the PDF. Arabic and Indic scripts print in the PDF as separate letters. The CSV keeps the text exactly.

BackupPaper makes no claim about how a court or anyone else will treat an export, and it is not legal advice. If the export is for a legal matter, ask the person who needs it what format and certification they expect.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export a group chat from an iPhone to a PC?

Yes, from a computer backup made with Apple Devices or iTunes, as long as the thread is in the backup. A tool such as BackupPaper opens the backup and saves the conversation as a PDF or CSV.

Why is my group chat missing from the backup?

If Messages in iCloud is on, Apple says computer backups do not include messages already stored in iCloud. The backup may also predate the conversation.

Will the PDF show who sent each message?

Yes. Each message shows its time and sender, and the header names the participants. Contact names appear when the backup includes the address book.

Are reactions and replies included?

BackupPaper shows reactions and replies in the conversation, and the CSV has a row for each reaction.

Does BackupPaper need my Apple Account?

No. It has no account and no iCloud sign-in, and it makes no network connections.

Try BackupPaper

BackupPaper is a one-time purchase in the Microsoft Store, with every feature free for 15 days. Open your backup, find the group thread, and check that it reads correctly before you buy. More detail is on the BackupPaper product page.
