To work out how much carpet to order, measure each room’s length and width, then lay out strips of the roll width (most carpet is made in 12-foot rolls) across the room, adding at least 3 inches at each wall for trimming. The carpet you buy is strips times cut length times roll width, which is usually well above the room’s floor area, so divide that figure, not the room area, by 9 for square yards. MeasureSet, a Windows takeoff app from Automata Labs, measures every room from the plan PDF in real units and exports the dimensions and areas to Excel, where the strip math takes a minute.
This guide explains why carpet is different from boxed flooring, walks through two worked examples, and shows where seam direction changes the answer.

Why is a carpet order bigger than the room area?
Because broadloom carpet comes off a roll of fixed width, and you buy full-width lengths. Boxed flooring can be cut into small pieces and spread across the floor, so its waste is a percentage. Carpet waste depends on how the room’s dimensions fit the roll.
Shaw Floors’ installation FAQ puts it plainly: “Most carpet is manufactured in 12-foot rolls, although 15-foot rolls are available as well,” and if a room is larger, “additional material may need to be ordered to account for seaming.”
The Carpet and Rug Institute’s residential installation standard, CRI 105, adds the rules that drive the layout:
| CRI 105 rule | What it means for the order |
|---|---|
| Correct measurements and a detailed diagram are essential before an installation can be planned or estimated (5.0) | Measure every room, not just the total floor area |
| Keep seams to a minimum; seams should run the length of the area, with main traffic parallel to them, natural light not striking across them, and away from doorways (5.1) | The cheapest layout is not always acceptable |
| Adjacent pieces of the same carpet need the same pile direction (5.2) | You cannot turn a leftover piece sideways to fill a gap |
| Cut to the seaming diagram, allowing at least 3 inches along each wall for trimming (5.3) | Every cut length is the room dimension plus 6 inches |
| Patterned carpet requires additional material for pattern matching (16.4) | Add the repeat on top of everything here |
If your area is square yards, the conversion is the easy part: 9 square feet make 1 square yard. The layout is where the real quantity comes from. Our guide to calculating flooring square footage from plans covers the room-area side; this post covers the roll.
How do you calculate carpet strips from a 12-foot roll?
Work room by room:
| Step | What to do | Example (11 ft x 13 ft 6 in bedroom) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Measure the room’s length and width at the plan’s scale | 11 ft 0 in x 13 ft 6 in |
| 2 | Add 6 in to each dimension for trim (3 in per wall) | 11 ft 6 in x 14 ft 0 in |
| 3 | Decide which way the strips run | Strips run along the 14 ft direction |
| 4 | Strips needed = trimmed width across the strips divided by roll width, rounded up | 11 ft 6 in / 12 ft = 1 strip |
| 5 | Cut length = trimmed length along the strips | 14 ft 0 in |
| 6 | Carpet bought = strips x cut length x roll width | 1 x 14 x 12 = 168 sq ft |
| 7 | Divide by 9 | 18.7 sq yd |
The room’s floor area is 148.5 square feet, or 16.5 square yards. The order is 18.7 square yards because the roll is wider than the room needs and each end needs trim. That gap is normal.
A useful rule of thumb falls out of step 2: a 12-foot roll covers a room up to 11 feet 6 inches across in a single piece. Anything wider needs a second strip and a seam, or a 15-foot product if one is available in the style you want.
What happens when a room is wider than the roll?
Take a 14 ft x 18 ft living room. Neither dimension fits a single 12-foot width, so there will be a seam. The two obvious layouts give very different orders:
| Layout | Strips run | Cut length | Strips | Carpet bought | Square yards |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Along the 18 ft length | 18 ft 6 in | 2 (to cover 14 ft 6 in) | 2 x 18.5 x 12 = 444 sq ft | 49.3 |
| B | Across, along the 14 ft side | 14 ft 6 in | 2 (to cover 18 ft 6 in) | 2 x 14.5 x 12 = 348 sq ft | 38.7 |
The room itself is 252 square feet, or 28 square yards. Layout B buys about 11 fewer square yards than layout A. But in layout B the seam runs across the room’s long direction, and CRI 105 asks for seams that run the length of the area with main traffic parallel to them. If the main traffic path runs the 18-foot way, layout B puts people walking across the seam.
That is why many estimators measure the plan, then let the installer or flooring dealer confirm the seaming diagram. Shaw’s FAQ says the same: in most cases the estimator, retailer or installer will determine the layout, but have the conversation so the result is the look you want.
Leftovers matter too. In layout A, the second strip only needs 2 ft 6 in of its 12-foot width, leaving a piece about 9 ft 6 in wide and 18 ft 6 in long. If a closet or a small bedroom in the same carpet can be cut from it, with pile running the same way, the total order across the house drops.

How do you take carpet dimensions off a plan PDF with MeasureSet?
MeasureSet does the measuring; the strip layout stays your call. According to its Microsoft Store listing and product page:
- Set the scale. MeasureSet reads the printed scale and offers it, or you calibrate by clicking both ends of a dimension you know and typing its length. Check a second dimension with the segment tool. Our guide to setting the scale on a PDF drawing covers why that check matters.
- Label the marks. Type a label such as Carpet under Next mark, so every room you measure for carpet totals together.
- Measure each room. Click inside a room to measure it wall to wall, even where walls are drawn as two lines, or use the rectangle and length tools to capture the room’s two dimensions. Points snap to walls and lines.
- Read room names. Room names are read from the plan, and the Excel export includes a room schedule.
- Export. Export Excel with blank price columns, a .csv, or a marked-up PDF with the totals.
In Excel, add three columns next to each room: trimmed width, strips and cut length, then multiply out. If your supplier prices by the square yard, MeasureSet also lets you give a label an order unit and what one unit covers, so the area total can be shown in the unit you buy.
What MeasureSet does not do is draw a seaming diagram or optimize cuts across rooms. It gives you accurate dimensions fast, which is the input a seaming plan needs.
What else should you add to a carpet takeoff?
| Item | How it is usually measured | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Pad (cushion) | Room area, often in square yards | Pad has no pile direction, so it fits closer to net area |
| Tack strip | Linear feet around the room perimeter | Measure with a length tool; leave out doorways where a transition goes |
| Transitions | Linear feet of each doorway to another floor type | CRI 105 calls for edges protected or covered by transition moldings |
| Stairs | Per step, by the installer’s method | Usually figured separately from room strips |
| Pattern repeat | Extra length per cut, from the manufacturer | CRI 105: patterned carpet requires additional material |
Our guide to doing a takeoff from PDF plans covers labels and totals for the other items.
Frequently asked questions
How many square yards of carpet do I need for a 12 by 12 room?
The room is 144 square feet, or 16 square yards. With 3 inches of trim at each wall it needs 12 ft 6 in each way, which is wider than a 12-foot roll, so you need a second strip and a seam, or a 15-foot roll. On a 15-foot roll the order is 15 x 12.5 = 187.5 square feet, or about 20.8 square yards.
Should I add a waste percentage to carpet?
The strip layout already includes most of the waste. Add extra only for pattern repeat, the installer’s preference, or cuts you cannot reuse.
Do all carpets come in 12-foot widths?
Shaw says most carpet is made in 12-foot rolls and that 15-foot rolls are available as well. Check the width of the specific product before you plan strips.
Can MeasureSet plan carpet seams?
No. MeasureSet measures rooms, lengths and areas from the PDF and exports them to Excel and CSV. Plan seams with your installer or dealer using those dimensions.
Is my plan uploaded anywhere?
No. MeasureSet has no account and no upload, and it never writes over your plan PDFs.
