PstVault vs Pst Viewer Pro vs Advanced PST Viewer: The Best PST Viewer for Windows to Export Emails to PDF

Published October 17, 2026 Updated October 17, 2026 8 min read

The best PST viewer for exporting emails to PDF on Windows depends on what you are opening. PstVault opens Unicode PST files without Outlook, searches them, and exports a selection as one bookmarked PDF with a JSON report and SHA-256 hashes, offline, for a one-time price. If you also have OST, MSG, MBOX, or old ANSI PST files, Pst Viewer Pro or Advanced PST Viewer covers more inputs.

The usual situation: someone hands you a PST from a retired laptop or a former employee, there is no Outlook on your PC, and you need certain messages as PDFs for a file, a client, or a dispute. Three paid Windows apps come up most often for that job. Here is how they compare, fairly.

Open a PST without Outlook and export what you need as one bookmarked PDF.

Which one should I pick?

Pick Advanced PST Viewer if you have an old ANSI PST (Outlook 97 to 2002), an OST, or you need deleted items recovered. At $49.95 it is close to PstVault’s regular price and opens more kinds of file.

Pick Pst Viewer Pro if your files arrive in mixed formats (PST, OST, MSG, EML, MBOX), you need PDF/A, or you want a command line to script conversions. Encryptomatic recommends Pst Viewer Pro for light to moderate work and its MailDex ($139) for heavy use. Pst Viewer Lite ($19.99) is its entry option.

Pick PstVault if your PST is a normal Unicode one (anything from Outlook 2003 on), and you want to search it, select what matters, and export one bookmarked PDF plus a JSON report listing each saved file with its SHA-256 hash. It is read-only and makes no network connections.

What does PstVault do?

PstVault opens an Outlook data file (.pst) without Outlook, searches it by sender, subject, body text, or date, and exports what you select. It reads the PST directly, so Outlook does not need to be installed, signed in, or set up with a mail profile.

  • Search. Search by sender, subject, body text, and a From and To date. Results are listed newest first.
  • PDF your way. Export a selection as one PDF with a bookmark per item, or one PDF per item, on Letter or A4. Append PDF, PNG, JPEG, and text attachments as pages, and embed the original files in the PDF.
  • Other formats. EML with headers, bodies, and attachments; offline HTML that loads no remote content; contacts as vCard 4.0 or one CSV for Excel; calendar items as .ics with recurring series and time zones. Native files picks EML, VCF, or ICS for each item by its type.
  • A record. Every export writes a JSON report of everything saved, with the SHA-256 of each file.
  • Nothing changes. The PST is opened read-only, existing files are never replaced, and nothing uploads.

Search the archive, select the messages, and export them with a report.

How do I export emails from a PST to PDF in PstVault?

  1. Open the PST. Choose Open PST, or double-click a .pst file in File Explorer. PstVault opens it read-only and lists every folder with its message count.
  2. Find the messages. Search by sender, subject, body text, or date, or browse a folder.
  3. Select. Pick messages one by one, or choose Select all results. The bar above the list counts the selection.
  4. Export PDF. Choose one bookmarked PDF or one PDF per message, the page size, and the attachment options.
  5. Choose where to save. Files land in that folder, named by date and subject, next to the JSON report.

More detail is in our guide to exporting a PST to PDF and the general PST viewer for Windows page.

What will PstVault not do?

  • ANSI PST files. It opens the Unicode format that Outlook 2003 and later create. Very old ANSI files need another tool, such as Advanced PST Viewer or Pst Viewer Pro.
  • OST, MSG, or MBOX input. PstVault opens PST files.
  • Deleted-item recovery. It shows what the PST holds.
  • A command line. Use Pst Viewer Pro if you need to script it.
  • Mac. It runs on Windows.
