Guided workflow variation

The page box says A-101,not page 2.

Callouts say see A-501, yet the viewer counts from 1. Page labels close that gap by giving each page its drawing identifier as its displayed number. SheetStamp writes one label per page from the title block, in a copy, alongside the bookmarks.

SheetStamp gives every page a label equal to its sheet number. Viewers that honor page labels show it; browser viewers show plain page numbers instead.

If this sounds like your week

Callouts point to drawings. Viewers count pages.

A detail bubble says 5/A-501 and a keynote says see S-301, but the viewer only understands page 37 of 112. Following references means translating identifiers into positions in your head, or opening thumbnails and hunting. Reviewers, project managers and foremen repeat that translation constantly, and whenever the set gets reordered or reissued, whatever they memorized about page positions stops being true.

Where tooling usually breaks

Page numbering tools think in sequences.

Labels are part of the PDF format, and a full editor can set them, usually by range with a numbering style, a prefix and a starting value. That suits front matter numbered i, ii, iii followed by 1, 2, 3. Drawing identifiers are not a sequence: A-101 sits beside A-102, then jumps to A-201, S2.01 or M-1A. Labelling a set in an editor means one range per page, typed manually.

Where SheetStamp lands

Each page labeled with its own drawing identifier.

SheetStamp writes a separate label entry for every page whose text is that page's identifier, with no numbering style attached, so A-101, S2.01 and M-1A appear exactly as printed. Labels come from the reviewed table, so a typed fix flows straight into the page box. A page left without an identifier keeps its plain position. Bookmarks are written in the same pass, and the source remains unchanged.

What you get

Feature highlights

One box for the whole set

drag one rectangle around the title block on page 1, or pick Bottom-right block or Right-edge strip, and SheetStamp reads that zone on every page, including scans, rotated pages and vertical title strips.

A review table, flagged rows first

because OCR can misread, sheet numbers not found, low-confidence reads, duplicates and oddly written numbers are flagged with the reason and the title block crop, and every cell can be edited.

Bookmarks from sheet names

a new PDF with one bookmark per page, such as A-101 - FIRST FLOOR PLAN, built from the title block and checked by you.

Page labels that match the sheets

each page gets its sheet number as its label, so viewers that support page labels show A-101 instead of 2.

One PDF per sheet

Save one file per sheet writes each page into a folder you pick, named by sheet number and title, at its original sheet size, without replacing any existing file.

Original untouched, nothing uploaded

the source PDF is opened read-only, saving over it is refused, text is read on your PC with Windows OCR, and there is no account and no network connection.

Especially when

  • Name the pages of a combined plan-set PDF from their title blocks instead of typing every sheet number and title by hand
  • Add bookmarks and page labels to a construction drawing set without a paid PDF editor
  • Split a plan set into one PDF per sheet, named by sheet number, on a Windows PC without uploading the drawings
  • Check every sheet number read from the title blocks before anything is written, with uncertain rows flagged

Who benefits

Real-world scenarios

A reviewer following detail callouts

A reviewer reads a wall section that points to details on A-501 and A-502 and wants to know at a glance which drawing is on screen while moving back and forth.

In a viewer that supports page labels, the page box shows A-501 while that sheet is open, so the open drawing is never in doubt. In a browser viewer, which ignores labels, the bookmarks panel lists the same sheet names for jumping.

A set with a notes page bound in

A combined PDF includes a letter-size general notes page with no title block, sitting between the cover sheet and the first floor plan.

That row is flagged because no sheet number was found. Left blank, the page keeps its plain page number as its label and its bookmark starts with Page; typing a number such as G-002 labels it like the rest.

A file with leftover roman page labels

A set assembled by another program carries page labels i to iv for the front pages and 1 onward for the rest, which match nothing printed on the drawings.

The copy SheetStamp saves replaces the old labels completely, so each page shows the sheet number from the reviewed table, with no mix of old and new numbering.

Deep dive

How PDF page labels work, and how SheetStamp writes them

Page positions and page labels are different things. Every PDF page has a position: first, second, third. A page label is an optional display name the file can store for a page, and viewers that support labels show it in the page box and under thumbnails instead of the position. The PDF format defines labels by ranges: a range starts at a given page and can carry a numbering style, a text prefix and a starting number. That design fits books, where front matter runs i, ii, iii and the body runs 1, 2, 3.

Why sheet numbers need one range per page. A drawing set has no arithmetic sequence to follow. A-101 might be followed by A-102, then A-201, then S2.01, then M-1A. SheetStamp therefore starts a new range on every page and gives it only a prefix, the sheet number itself, with no numbering style. The label is the literal text from the review table, so A-101 shows as A-101 and S2.01 as S2.01.

Pages without a number. If a row has no sheet number when you save, that page's label is its plain page number, so the page box is never blank. Such rows are flagged as Sheet number not found before you export, and typing a number in the Sheet cell gives the page a proper label.

Where labels show, and where they do not. Viewers that honor page labels display them; we confirmed this in a full desktop PDF reader. Browser PDF viewers, including the one in Microsoft Edge, ignore page labels and keep showing 1, 2, 3. That is how those viewers behave, not a fault in the file, and the bookmarks SheetStamp writes alongside the labels still appear there. If the people you send the set to read it in a browser, the bookmarks are what they will use.

Replacing old labels. Some files arrive with labels left over from the program that assembled them. SheetStamp writes a complete new label set into the copy, so old labels are replaced rather than mixed with the new ones. The one-file-per-sheet export is different: each split file is a single page with a bookmark and no label.

Read before you write. Labels are only as good as the Sheet column. Windows text recognition can misread or drop short numbers such as T1, and a number misread in the usual spot is flagged only when it duplicates another sheet. Look down the Sheet column under All pages before choosing Save bookmarked copy.

How it is built

Built so you check the names before anything is written.

Review, then export

OCR can misread, so every page lands in a review table first. Missing, uncertain and duplicate sheet numbers are flagged with the title block crop, and any cell can be fixed by typing.

Original never changed

The source PDF is opened read-only and saving over it is refused. Every export is a new file, and split files never replace an existing file.

Nothing uploads

Text is read with the OCR built into Windows, on your PC. No account, no sign-in, no network connections. One-time purchase in the Microsoft Store.

FAQ

Straight answers—no glossary dump

How do I add page labels to a plan set PDF?

Open the set in SheetStamp, draw a rectangle around the title block on page 1, and choose Read all pages. Check the Sheet column, fix flagged rows by typing, and choose Save bookmarked copy. The new file has one page label per page equal to its sheet number, plus a bookmark for each sheet. The original file is not changed.

Why does my browser still show page 2 instead of A-101?

Browser PDF viewers, including the one in Microsoft Edge, ignore page labels and show the plain page position. The labels are in the file, and a viewer that supports page labels displays them. The bookmarks SheetStamp writes in the same copy do show in browser viewers, so use the bookmarks panel there to jump to a sheet.

Can I use a numbering style instead, such as 1, 2, 3 or i, ii, iii?

No. SheetStamp writes literal labels only: each page's label is the text in its Sheet cell, or its plain page number when that cell is empty. It has no numbering styles, counters or roman numerals. For book-style numbering of a document that is not a drawing set, a full PDF editor is the right tool.

What is SheetStamp, and what does it need to run?

SheetStamp is a Windows app that names the pages of a plan-set PDF from their title blocks: it reads each sheet number, title and revision, lets you check them in a review table, and saves a new copy with bookmarks and page labels, or one PDF per sheet. It runs on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, on x64 and Arm64. Text is read with the recognition built into Windows, so a Windows OCR language must be installed; if none is, SheetStamp names the Settings page where you add one. No paid PDF editor is needed.

Will SheetStamp change my original PDF?

No. The PDF you open is read-only to SheetStamp, and every export writes a new file: a bookmarked copy you name in the Windows save dialog, or one PDF per sheet in a folder you pick. If you choose the original file as the save target, SheetStamp refuses before writing anything, even after you confirm the dialog's replace prompt. Split files never replace an existing file; a clash gets a new name instead.

Does anything leave my PC, and how do I get SheetStamp?

Nothing is uploaded. Text recognition runs on your PC, the app makes no network connections, and there is no account or sign-in. It reads only the PDF you pick and writes only to the file or folder you pick. SheetStamp is a one-time purchase in the Microsoft Store, with a 15-day free trial that has every feature, so you can run your own plan sets through it before you buy. There is no subscription.
