Adobe Acrobat Pro’s Compare Files tool compares two PDF files, and its Scanned documents, drawings or illustrations mode compares pages as images, which makes it workable for a single drawing. Drawing Revision Delta is built for whole drawing sets: it pairs every sheet in two revisions by the sheet number in its title block, aligns each pair, ranks the most changed sheets first, clouds every change, and exports a change report and a clouded set. If you compare one sheet now and then and already pay for Acrobat Pro, Acrobat is enough. If a 60-sheet addendum lands on your desk, a set tool saves the afternoon.

What does Acrobat’s Compare Files tool do?
Adobe documents it in Compare two versions of a PDF file. In Acrobat Pro, you choose the old and new files and a document type:
| Acrobat document type | What Adobe says it is for |
|---|---|
| Autodetect | Acrobat picks the method |
| Reports, Spreadsheets, Magazine layouts | Text-heavy documents |
| Presentation decks | Slides |
| Scanned documents, drawings, or illustrations | Captures each page as an image and compares pixels, matches similar pages and detects reordering; Adobe names architectural drawings as a use |
The tool also offers a Compare text only option, page ranges for each file, a summary page of results, a side-by-side view, and filters for change types. Facts from Adobe’s help article, checked on 17 October 2026.
For one revised sheet, that is a fine workflow, and many offices already have Acrobat Pro.
Where does a drawing set need more than a two-file compare?
Drawing revisions arrive as sets, and sets misbehave:
- Sheets move. A new sheet is inserted, a detail sheet is removed, or the order changes between revisions.
- Files split differently. One revision is a single 80-page PDF, the next is a folder of individual sheets.
- Plots shift. A sheet is plotted with a different margin, a slight rotation, or a scanner stretch, so a pixel compare lights up everything.
- Title blocks always change. The date, revision letter and initials change on every sheet, which buries the real edits.
- You need a deliverable. A list of what changed, and a clouded set to forward, not just a view on screen.

How does Drawing Revision Delta compare a set?
Drawing Revision Delta is a Windows app for comparing two revisions of a drawing set:
- Add the two revisions. Pick the earlier and later sets: PDFs, scans, or TIFF, PNG, JPEG and BMP images, in any file or page order.
- Let it pair the sheets. Each sheet is matched by the sheet number in its title block, read from the PDF text or with the text recognition built into Windows for scans and CAD plots drawn as lines. Sheets with no number pair by title or file name. Pair selected and Unpair set any pair by hand.
- Mask the title block. Choose Mask title block for the usual bottom-right area, or Draw mask. Content inside is shown in light gray and not counted, so a new date or revision letter does not flag every sheet.
- Compare all. Each pair is aligned for shift, rotation and scale, with local stretch correction. The Pairs table fills in each sheet’s share of change, its number of changes and its text edits, and Most changed first puts the sheets that need a look at the top.
- Review. Compare selected opens a pair in Overlay, Blink or Side by side. Red was only in the earlier revision, blue is new. Fade unchanged lightens everything else.
- Export. Choose folder and export writes the change report, the clouded set with an editable cloud around every change, sheet-summary.csv, changes.csv and PNG snapshots. The report lists a SHA-256 hash of every compared file.

When should you stick with Acrobat?
- One sheet, occasionally. Acrobat’s image-based compare handles a single drawing well enough, and you already have it.
- Mostly text documents. For specifications, contracts and reports, Acrobat’s text compare is the better tool. Drawing Revision Delta is built for drawings.
- Mac users. Drawing Revision Delta runs on Windows 11 only.
- You need to edit the PDF. Acrobat edits, signs and organizes PDFs. Drawing Revision Delta compares and exports; it does not edit drawings.
When does a set tool pay off?
- Addenda before a bid. Dozens of sheets, a deadline, and the risk that one changed sheet was not clouded. See the addendum drawing review checklist.
- Checking your own issue. Architects and engineers confirming that every change in a new revision is clouded before the set goes out. See find unclouded changes on drawings.
- Scans and plots. Older revisions that only exist as scans, compared against a newer CAD PDF.
- A record. A PDF report and CSV files that show what changed between two issues, kept with the project.
Frequently asked questions
Can Acrobat compare drawings at all?
Yes. Adobe’s help article lists a Scanned documents, drawings, or illustrations document type that compares pages as images and names architectural drawings as a use.
Does Drawing Revision Delta need Acrobat?
No. It renders pages with the PDF engine built into Windows and reads scanned title blocks with the Windows text recognition engine.
Can it read edited text on scans?
Edited notes and dimensions are read from the PDF text. On scanned sheets there is no PDF text, so changes show as clouded red and blue regions rather than edited words.
Does it change my drawings?
No. Compared drawings are opened for reading only. The clouded set copies each revised sheet unchanged into a new PDF and adds the cloud markups.
Is anything uploaded?
No. It runs in the Windows app sandbox with no account, no sign-in and no telemetry.
