Guided workflow variation

Clouds mark what was flagged. This finds what was not.

Revision clouds depend on someone remembering to draw them. Drawing Revision Delta compares the drawings themselves, so a moved wall, a swapped fixture, or a reworded note shows up whether or not anybody clouded it.

Compare the two revisions, turn on Fade unchanged, and every edit stands out in red and blue, clouded or not, with edited words listed beside it.

If this sounds like your week

A revision cloud is a pointer, not a proof.

Bubbles and delta tags tell a reader where to look, and most reviewers start there. But each bubble is drawn by hand after the edit, and edits made late, made by another discipline, or made while fixing something nearby are easy to leave unmarked. The issue goes out with tidy bubbles around half the story.

Where tooling usually breaks

Unmarked edits surface at the worst time.

A plan reviewer approves what was flagged and misses the rest. An estimator prices the flagged scope and hears about the other edit from a change order request. Holding every page up against its predecessor is the manual remedy, and on forty pages that means hours of squinting for a handful of differences.

Where Drawing Revision Delta lands

Compare the line work, not the bubbles.

Drawing Revision Delta renders both revisions of each sheet, aligns them, and compares them at 150 or 200 DPI. Differences are grouped into numbered changes, each clouded by the app whether the drawing carried a cloud there or not. Fade unchanged dims the rest, and edited words are read from the PDF text and listed in plain terms.

What you get

Feature highlights

Whole sets paired by sheet number

pick a folder or files for each revision, as one combined PDF, a file per sheet, or scans in TIFF, PNG, JPEG, and BMP, and sheets are matched by the number in each title block, read from the PDF text or with the text recognition built into Windows.

Changed sheets ranked

Compare all gives every sheet its number of changes, share of change, and text edits, sorts the most changed first, and lists the sheets that are new or removed.

Revision clouds around every change

every change is clouded and numbered in the change list, including changes nobody clouded on the drawing, and Fade unchanged shows exactly what moved.

Text edits in plain words

notes, dimensions, and schedules are compared word by word from the PDF text, so an edit reads “2x6” → “2x8”, even when only one character changed.

Aligned before it compares

each pair is lined up for shift, rotation, and scale and corrected locally for plotter and scanner stretch, then shown in Overlay, Blink, or Side by side.

A report and a clouded set, nothing uploaded

export a PDF change report with a SHA-256 hash of every compared file, the revised sheets with editable cloud markups, CSV files, and PNG snapshots, all on your PC.

Especially when

  • Find which sheets changed between a bid set and an addendum or conformed set without flipping through both PDFs sheet by sheet
  • Catch changes that were never clouded on a reissued drawing, including one-word edits to notes, schedules, and dimensions
  • Overlay two revisions of a sheet that were plotted at a different offset or scale, without lining them up by hand
  • Send the field or the bid file a clouded set and a change report without uploading the drawings to an online service

Who benefits

Real-world scenarios

A drawing checker before issue

A small architecture office is about to issue Revision 2. The checker wants to confirm that every change since Revision 1 carries a cloud and a delta tag before the set goes out.

She compares Revision 1 with the draft Revision 2 and opens each changed sheet. Any change the app clouded where the drawing has no cloud is one to add before issue, and the PNG snapshots make a punch list for the drafter.

A plan review consultant on a resubmittal

A resubmitted set arrives with clouds around the corrections the review asked for. Anything else that changed since the first submission also needs a look before the review is signed off.

Comparing the first submission with the resubmittal ranks the changed sheets. On each one, the applicant's new clouds show as blue line work around the edit, and an app cloud with no blue cloud beside it marks a change that was not called out.

A contractor checking a reissued plan

A reissued floor plan arrives with one cloud around a new door. The superintendent wants to know whether that door is the whole story before releasing the framing crew.

The overlay shows the clouded door, and also a shelving layout replaced by tables with no cloud on the drawing. Both are in the change list, and the clouded set marks both for the field.

Deep dive

How to catch the changes nobody clouded

Why clouds go missing. Revision clouds are drawn by hand, after the edit, by whoever remembers. Late changes, coordination fixes from another discipline, and edits made while correcting something nearby are the usual ones left without a cloud. A review that reads only the clouds inherits every one of those gaps.

Compare the drawings, then read the clouds. Drawing Revision Delta compares the two revisions of each sheet directly, so its result does not depend on the drafter's clouds at all. In the overlay, a cloud the architect added shows up as new blue line work around the edit. Where the app's red cloud surrounds a change with no blue cloud next to it, that change was not called out on the drawing.

Fade unchanged. Turn on Fade unchanged in the Compare view and the unchanged drawing lightens to a pale gray, so only the red and blue edits keep their weight. A replaced furniture layout or a shifted partition stands out at once, even on a busy plan.

Step through every change. The change list numbers each change, R1, R2, and onward, with its position on the sheet in points and the pixels removed and added. Next and previous step through them in order, and selecting one centers it in the view. Nearby changes share a cloud, labeled with the range they cover, such as R16–R19.

Read the words that changed. Text is compared word by word from the PDF text and listed beside each change, such as “GUARDRAIL AT STAIR LANDING.” → “GLASS GUARDRAIL AT STAIR LANDING.”. A one-character edit in small text, the kind most likely to go unclouded, gets a change of its own.

Keep the title block quiet. Every reissued sheet has a new date and revision entry. Mask title block, or Draw mask over the exact area, keeps those edits out of the count so the unclouded changes are not buried among them.

Set the sensitivity. Fine: report small edits shows every small difference; Ignore small differences quiets the line-weight noise when the two revisions came from different PDF drivers. Standard sensitivity sits between them.

Hand off the findings. Save clouded set writes the revised sheets with a cloud markup around every change, each with a comment that names what changed. The change report, changes.csv, and the PNG snapshots of each change make a record the drafter or the applicant can work from.

How it is built

Built to compare the drawings themselves, on your PC.

Aligned, then compared

Each pair is fitted for shift, rotation, and scale and corrected locally for plotter and scanner stretch, so the clouds mark what changed, whether or not the drawing was clouded.

Nothing uploads

It runs in the Windows app sandbox with no declared capabilities and no network code. No account, no sign-in, no telemetry, and scanned title blocks are read with Windows text recognition on the PC.

Drawings opened read-only

The sets you compare are only read. Every export is a new file, and the clouded set copies each revised sheet unchanged, with the clouds added as editable PDF markups.

FAQ

Straight answers—no glossary dump

Why do revised drawings have unclouded changes?

Clouds are drawn by hand after the edit, so they depend on the drafter remembering every change. Late edits, fixes from another discipline, and changes made while correcting something nearby are often left without one. Comparing the drawings themselves, as Drawing Revision Delta does, finds those edits whether or not they were clouded.

How does Drawing Revision Delta find changes that have no cloud?

It renders the earlier and later revision of each sheet, aligns them for shift, rotation, scale, and plotter stretch, and compares them at 150 or 200 DPI. Every difference is grouped into numbered changes and clouded by the app, and edited words are read from the PDF text. The drafter's clouds play no part in finding the changes.

Can I tell the architect's clouds from the app's clouds?

Yes. The architect's clouds are part of the drawing, so a newly added one shows in the overlay as blue line work. The app's clouds are drawn on top in red with a label such as R7, and in the exported clouded set they are separate PDF cloud markups authored by Drawing Revision Delta, each with a comment naming the change.

What happens to my original drawing files?

They stay exactly as they were. Drawing Revision Delta opens the drawings you pick for reading only and writes every export as a new file, in the folder you choose or under the name you type. The clouded set copies each revised sheet into a new PDF and adds the clouds as markups, so the issued sheets in your project folder are never touched.

Do my drawings stay on my PC, and how do I get the app?

Yes, they stay on your PC. Drawing Revision Delta runs in the Windows app sandbox with no declared capabilities and has no network code, no account, no sign-in, and no telemetry. Scanned title blocks are read with the text recognition built into Windows, on the PC. The app is a one-time purchase in the Microsoft Store for Windows 11 on x64 and ARM64 PCs, and the Store runs a 15-day free trial of the full app.
